A Summerfield Township man wants to open a medical marijuana growing operation in his home to serve up to a dozen patients.
Matt Nelson, an Ida native who lives on Lulu Road west of Sylvania-Petersburg Rd., requested a home occupation permit at the township board meeting last month. After questioning the man about the operation, the board referred the matter to the township planning commission to review. The commission’s next meeting is at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the township hall, 26 Saline St.
Nelson told the board he could grow up to 72 marijuana plants for medical purposes under a state license he has, said Supervisor John Chandler. Home operations are permitted in an agricultural-zoned district like this one, Chandler said.
“I don’t see any reason why you would say no,” the supervisor said Tuesday. “It’s permitted under a home operation as long as he follows the rules. He’s real passionate about growing the plants” for medicinal purposes such as pain relief.
The commission will make a recommendation to the board, which has the final
