A proposed ban on the sale of recreational marijuana in Pembroke has been approved by town residents in two recent votes.
At the annual Town Meeting on May 9, voters adopted a general bylaw providing for the ban. Then at the annual town election on May 13, a ballot question calling for the ban was approved by a vote of 842 to 313.
The newly adopted bylaw, as with any bylaw adopted by a town, still needs approval from the state attorney general.
Town Administrator Edwin Thorne said that in seeking that approval, the town also plans to request guidance from the attorney general on whether Pembroke also needs to adopt a zoning bylaw on the subject to effect a ban. If so, the measure would come before this year’s fall Town Meeting.
“We hope that general bylaw and the election result are sufficient, but we’ll see. This is new to everybody,” Thorne said.
