SAN LEANDRO — The Davis Street Wellness Center has received the first approval needed to open a medical marijuana dispensary, over the objections of city staff.
The staff maintained the proposed 7,704-square-foot dispensary, at 3089 Teagarden St., is too close to the Davis Street Family Resource Center, a nonprofit that helps low-income and immigrant families and where young children receive social services. There also was concern about the effect of parking on nearby businesses and what the staff called an inadequate security plan.
However, the San Leandro Board of Zoning Adjustments voted 6-1 in favor of the dispensary at its Oct. 5 meeting, where several civic leaders spoke in favor of Davis Street’s plan.
In its report, city staff wrote: “A harmonious and workable relationship among land uses at this location is improbable given that there are adjacent land uses that serve families, children, adolescents and other vulnerable individuals who would be adversely affected by the immediate presence of a medical cannabis dispensary.”
