Holliston will soon vote on whether or not to ban marijuana retail sales in town. A ‘yes’ vote would prohibit retail marijuana businesses from opening in Holliston while still allowing adults to possess and use medical or recreational marijuana as allowed under Massachusetts law. As a parent, Holliston Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition member, and someone who has worked in behavioral health and public health, I support the retail marijuana ban.
This decision is driven by a desire to protect Holliston’s family-friendly culture. Although retailers cannot sell to youth, alcohol already finds its way into teens’ hands, usually from people they know. In the case of marijuana, this could take the form of THC-infused cookies and sodas with confusing serving sizes that kids could easily overlook. And while these products may still come into our community, substance use research indicates that fewer access points mean lower youth use rates.
