Maynard Town Counsel Kate Feodoroff reviewed the process for approving or prohibiting recreational marijuana facilities in town at the Dec. 5 Board of Selectmen meeting.
A recent statewide vote legalized the use of recreational marijuana but did not prescribe procedures or regulations to control the sale and use of recreational marijuana.
The state allowed a moratorium on the approval of recreational marijuana establishments while regulatory laws were put in place. These laws are expected to be completed in March and the Cannabis Control Commission is expected to begin accepting applications for commercial recreational establishments beginning April 1. Applications will be approved if they meet the laws of the local communities in which they are to be located, said Feodoroff. The first licenses will be issued on June 1 and the retail sale of recreational marijuana will be allowed beginning July 1.
This makes it imperative for local towns to quickly enact regulations to control recreational marijuana businesses, she said.
