NILES — Five months ago, a limited number of medical marijuana businesses were invited into the city to set up shop, but more and more potential businesses keep knocking at City Hall door.
Now city staff are wondering if the city council might want to consider more applications for licenses, or issue a moratorium as the state’s new commercial medical marijuana industry continues on a slow, uncertain path.
“We continue to get calls every single day from folks who want to bring their medical marijuana business into the city. I’m getting between five and 20 calls every week,” Community Development Director Sanya Vitale told city council members Monday night.
City Administrator Ric Huff fields a similar number of calls, she said.
But everything feels like it’s up in the air.
The state is wading through a backlog of medical cannabis business license applications and has yet to issue a final approval on any.
