GREENFIELD — The American Legion could become the home of Franklin County’s first medical marijuana dispensary.
Director of Planning Eric Twarog confirmed Patriot Care Corp. has told town officials it is interested in the 12,700-square-foot building at 7 Legion Ave. Support from a host community is an important part of a license application to the state Department of Public Health.
The medical marijuana dispensary hopeful is one of four applicants who were invited to submit an application to operate a registered marijuana dispensary in the seven counties without a selected dispensary, including Franklin County.
Chief Executive and Director of Patriot Care Robert Mayerson said the group has found a location in Greenfield, but he declined to discuss specifics.
Patriot Care hopes to work with the downtown business association as it moves forward with its application.
“We reached out to the Greenfield Business Association and we’re ready to hear back and get together with them,” said Mayerson.
The group has until 3 p.m. on Aug. 29 to submit its application to Boston.
The state expects to announce provisional licenses for open counties in October, Department of Public Health spokesman Alec Loftus said.
“We’re absolutely submitting one for Greenfield,” said Greg Czarnowski, marketing and advertising director for Patriot Care. “We’re putting together education and security plans.”
The town is working on drafting a letter of community support for the nonprofit, Twarog said.
Patriot Care, which won a license for Lowell, is also pursuing a license in Suffolk County for its second dispensary, Czarnowski said. Statewide, Patriot Care has the potential to propose four dispensary sites in addition to its proposed Lowell facility.
The cultivation facility would be centered in South Hadley.
Commander David Lewis said a final agreement on the sale of the building for $219,000 would likely be reached in a couple of months. But he declined to not comment on who was purchasing the building, stating a non-disclosure agreement.
The two-story brick building off Wells Street has been vacant since last November when the American Legion put it on the market.
The nonprofit — dedicated to community service and benefits for veterans — has since switched its meetings to Smitty’s Pub on Chapman Street, Lewis said.
The nonprofit plans to look for a new permanent location, but it has not pursued any plans yet, awaiting the sale of its current building, Lewis said.
Cohn & Company Real Estate is handling the sale. Realtor Mark Abramson could not be reached for comment.
The building, which has a full basement, first and second floor, was built in 1920.
The American Legion had been meeting in the building since 1948, Lewis said.
