Welcome to Leonard Street in Belmont Center, where you’ll find a variety of upscale clothing boutiques, jewelry stores, a chocolate and candy shop, three wine and beer stores, a full service supermarket, bookstore and pot shop. Wait a minute. Did someone say, “pot shop?”
That’s right, isn’t it great? Now recreational marijuana users in Belmont won’t have to leave town to get their fix because it’s conveniently located right in their backyard. Better yet, it will bring much-needed tax income to the town to be used solely for drug education.
Is it possible voters didn’t think they were voting to allow a retail marijuana establishment to open in Belmont? Legalizing it in the state is one thing. Allowing it to be sold in your town is another. But selectmen seem to think Belmont residents are OK with it because Belmont voters voted in favor of Question 4 – the 2016 state ballot question to legalize recreational marijuana — 52.48 to 47.52 percent
